“Daniela Vega received critical acclaim for her performance in A Fantastic Woman as young trans woman Marina, a singer and waitress in Santiago whose older boyfriend dies unexpectedly. With its win for Best Foreign Language Film, A Fantastic Woman made history as the first Academy Award-winning film to feature a transgender storyline with an openly transgender actor in the lead role.
In 2018, Vega also became the first transgender person to present at the prestigious ceremony. In an interview with The Guardian, Vega said of the relationship between the transgender community and the Republican Party (trust us when we say, it’s a finger-wagging moment): “It actually gives me a physical pleasure to annoy conservatives. I don’t have to be violent, I don’t have to insult anyone – my mere existence shakes those people up.”
Being the somewhat paranoiac person I am, often I wonder if I was in the acting business, would I be forever wondering where my next job would be coming from. I wonder also if transgender actress Nicole Maines can land another starring role after her current gig as “Supergirl” comes to a close. (Which it is).
Then again too, there have been other transgender actors such as Jesse James Keitel who has expanded the traditional trans binary narrative past the more simplistic transgender woman and man into referring to herself as a transfeminine person with the “she/her-they/them” pronouns. She is currently starring on the ABC television series Big Sky” (below). At the least, hopefully these groundbreaking trans actresses will help pave the way for the next generation of transgender acting talent who are simply known for their skills.
On Saturday Night Live last week, as I was nearly dozing off during the latter parts of the show, I was surprised to see a figure obviously in a full dress on stage before the show cut away to a commercial break.
I was surprised to see the show’s musical guest “Kid Cudi” in the dress and ready to perform as the break was over. Reaction was swift, This is from the “Guardian” :
“The dress marked the anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death, with Cudi saying that it was a tribute to the Nirvana frontman who had worn a similar dress on the cover of the Face magazine in 1993. While social media users praised the way Kid Cudi channeled Cobain’s gender non-conforming approach to fashion, they also pointed out a double standard.
On Instagram, model and activist Munroe Bergdorf wrote: “as fab as it is to see cis gender straight men embracing femininity through fashion … let’s remember that they also won’t face nearly as much hatred or the physical danger that visibly queer folk will when they do the exact same thing.”
In the comments, one user wrote “it feels insulting that cis hetro men get praised for what trans people get bullied and killed for. For them it’s a trend, a costume … for trans people it’s life and death.” Some 13 transgender people have been murdered in 2021 so far according to the Human Rights Campaign, which is a 333% increase from 2020 when three transgender people were killed.”
Recently, I wrote a post spotlighting a punk rock musician (Laura Jane Grace) who made the transgender transition to a woman in the middle of her career.
Perhaps you may remember, one of the all time Cyrsti’s Condo regulars, Connie (below)
is also a musician as well as Paula in Great Britain.
Connie sent in this comment concerning her interaction with her fellow musicians:
“Punk fans would, most likely, be more accepting than would, say, Country music fans to see a musician make an mtf transition. One of the things that held me back from transitioning was my music. Not that I had “made it”, at all, but it was a big deal for me to make the change from a front man to a front woman. Even though the band’s bookings became more plentiful with me as a woman, the guys in the band felt we’d become more of a novelty act.
I was told that I needed to make up my mind which gender I was going to perform as. It was not difficult for me to make the decision, as my transition was already in motion. It wasn’t the first time, nor was it the last, that a woman broke up a band. I just did it a little differently. ;-)”
My only question was did you have to give up your music before the pandemic took it away anyhow?
While transgender woman Hunter Schafer’s only acting credit to date is on the HBO series Euphoria, it’s an important one. The character has been praised for being one of the few transgender actors on television to not be depicted as struggling with their identity. Her role showed that a trans person can be seen simply as a person on a show – being trans doesn’t have to define them.
Schafer has modeled as well for a number of top brands, from Dior to Calvin Klein and Vera Wang, and continues her work as an activist for the LGBTQ+ community,
Laura Jane Grace is known as the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for punk band Against Me!, which she founded in the late 1990s. In 2012, she came out as transgender, becoming a rock-music trailblazer in the process. In a 2012 Rolling Stone profile that served as her public coming out, she admitted she was nervous. “Even now, there’s a part of me that’s not convinced I know what the f**k I’m doing,” she said, adding, “But there’s another part of me that’s completely, 100 percent sure.”
Richards not only starred in Her Story, she also co-produced it. The show went on to receive an Emmy nomination back in 2016. But more importantly, Richards, who has since appeared on TV series like Nashville, Better Things, and Tales of the City, has been working hard to promote trans visibility.
She founded an organization called Trans 100, which works to honor and recognize trans people and businesses that are doing positive things for the community. She has also been an advocate for pushing producers to cast actual trans people in trans roles. Her picture is below.
Treechada Petcharat, better known as Poyd, is a famous transsexual Thai actress and model.
As a child, Treechada knew she was a girl, but in front of her parents, she had to pretend and live as a male. She felt disgusted by her “male” genitals, so at the age of 19, she underwent gender reassignment surgery and since then, she has said that she feels as if she has been reborn. At age 19, Treechada won the Miss Tiffany’s 2004 and Miss International Queen 2004. (Source: Wikipedia)
Hari Nef (below) is an American actress, model and writer. Nef made her runway debut at New York Fashion Week Spring 2015, walking for both Hood By Air and Eckhaus Latta. Nef is known for speaking about trans issues. She is the first openly transgender person to appear on the cover of a major British magazine.
